Every year the Mayor of New York holds a reception at Grassy Mansion for Greek Independence Day. Again this year the Home of our Mayors was deck out in Greek and Cypriot flags, Greek music was plaing By a live bouzouki band and the Mansion was full to the brim with dignitaries and plain people like us. There was good food and plenty of Greek wine to go around and we all took the opportunity to indulge. The Mayor took the time to shake our hand and to take a photo with each one of us, and trust me it takes a lot of patience to shake the hands of about 500 Greeks, but everything went smoothly. The time came for the speeches and the niceties of political correctness that is their language, His Honor the mayor Mr. Bloomberg was very gracious and also plaid A trivia game with the woo struck people in the audience, The Archbishop of our faith stepped to the mike next and with his usoual grace led all of us to a prayer for our City our counties and for the men and women that serve their country in Iraq. The council General of Greece and of Cyprus also gave inspiring speeches and last but not least Mr. Nick Diamantides the president of the Federation of Hellenic Societies gave his speech and reintroduced the urgency for all of us to attend this year’s parade.
