The ladies of the Miss Greek Independence pageant
and our Consul General Mrs Aglaia Mpalta
At Hellas radio station
New York March 26, 2008
By Athanasios Aronis.
Yesterday we celebrated Greek Independence Day at
the Greek consulate in Manhattan and at Hellas Radio
station.
The members of the Culture Committee of the
Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York
Miss Avgerini Catechis , Mrs Polixeni Katechis, Mr.
Petros Pavlou and yours truly Athanasios Aronis
escorted the ladies of the Miss Greek Independence
pageant to the Greek consulate.
We were welcomed by our new Consul General Mrs.
Aglaia Mpalta. A few words about our host.
For the first time in my tenure as a member of the
Culture Committee I saw a member of our Greek
government act with such warmth, humility and grace.
The whole time she stayed in the front vestibule of the
consulate with her husband, greeting every body that
walked in and letting us feel that the consulate is our
house too. When it was time for us to go she took the
time to direct me and take the perfect photo of the
ladies and her, which I’m forever grateful.
After the consulate we all drove to Long Island City in
Queens to the Hellas radio station which held a 17
hour telethon for our Greek Independence parade.
(Next week in the rouxiotis biweekly magazine I’m
going in depth in what it takes to organize this great
event.) The young ladies took time off their busy
schedules to help and raise money for this great
cause.
In the past some ignorant members of our community
have described the ladies of the pageant, as the
flower pots of the Federation. O.K. I’m going to let you
decide.
All of the young ladies are either finishing High School
or in higher studies, in the universities and colleges of
our area, to become teachers, doctors, scientists, and
future politicians. I haven’t seen a single one off these
so called critics give a hand in support of our
community
These ladies make their parents, teachers and both of
their countries proud.
