Hello Everyone,
I was approached by my father to help out with the new website and I couldn't turn down the offer.
It is my honor and privilege to be contributing to the new Erikoussa website, bringing us one step
closer to keeping Erikoussiotes united, informed and entertained. In order to do that, the first step
above all is an introduction. For those of you who know me, continue reading anyway (lol) and for
those of you who don't I hope this helps you to understand where I am coming from.
I am 22 years old and the eldest daughter of Athanasios and Afrodite Aronis. I was born in New
York City on December 15th 1985. Although I am American born and raised, I have always
identified myself with my Greek heritage and furthermore Erikoussiotiko background. I have always
felt a personal attachment to Erikoussa, a place I consider my second home. To be able to have
the luxury of going to Greece and seeing my family and friends, and truly mean it when I say "I'm
going home!" is something I will never take for granted. I have the privilege of having the best of
two worlds and it is something I am truly grateful for.
As I got older I realized the importance of being involved, to keep the traditions and values taught
by our parents alive. Even though as a young child I whined and complained about going to Greek
school, I now know that it was in my best interest. I see now that If our ancestors were able to keep
our culture and religion under the Ottoman Empire occupation, there is no excuse for us when we
live in a free, democratic state. I can only hope and dream that when it is my turn to teach my
children that they too will be as grateful for being taught the same things as I was.
I hope you as Erikoussiotes realize the hard work and dedication it takes in order to put something
like this together. To realize that the most important thing is to be able come together and set all
differences aside whatever they may be, and know that even though we have our own opinions,
sto kato vathos, imaste olli ap'to idio nisi and that is one thing we have in common that can never
be taken away.
